BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Algerian scientific community in the field of unsaturated soils has been organized since 2009 as a network that led to the creation of a technical committee (TC Unsat) within the Algerian Association of Geotechnics(ALGEOS). The organization of an international symposium on unsaturated soils every 3 years became a tradition. The 4th edition of this conference will be organized in 2018 at the University of Tizi Ouzou. To meet a pressing need for young researchers working on the theme of unsaturated soils, a doctorate course was organized on the sidelines of the conference Unsat Batna 2015. It had allowed 30 young researchers from 12 universities and one industrial establishment to receive training on the basic concepts related to unsaturated soils. The scientific committee had recommended the continuation of the course. Thus, a second edition of this course will be organized in November 2016 in USTHB Algiers. This 2nd edition will be distinguished especially by organizing practical work sessions to introduce young researchers to the main experimental techniques for unsaturated soils including the measurement and control of sucking.

  • Psychometric method • method filter paper • Air Pressure Method • vapor balance method • osmotic method • Session 2: Practical work (4h). This session takes place in the laboratory and aim to promote the techniques of measurement and control of sucking.
  • Triaxial Way controlled suction • suction controlled oedometer and isotropic Compression • drainage path humidification • Session 3: experimental behavior aspects (2h).
  • Independent variables Approach • generalized effective stress Approach • Session 4: Introduction to modeling aspects (2h)
